Yet Another Modest Proposal…
In the future you may kindly refer to this as “The S. C. Dixon Doctrine”
I hereby propose that no representative, no congressman or woman, senator or other “public servant” representing the people to the federal government (or representing the federal government to the people) with the exception of the Commander in Chief, shall earn a salary in excess of the current amount paid to U.S. servicemen and women who have attained the rank of corporal or its equivalency.
The next job on the agenda for the senate/congress is to decide which is which. Do they take one hell of a pay cut or will our soldiers be suddenly able to support their families without resorting to food stamps and credit card debt? (I will accept a compromise of parity such as raising soldier’s wages by 75% and reducing government pay scale(s) by a like percentage.)
By the bye, the same applies to pensions, health care, and extended-family perks.
What is good enough for someone in the armed services of this nation, in order to protect and defend it, is certainly good enough for the “law-makers” who send them off into harm’s way.
And visa-versa.
Let’s start on this tomorrow, okay?

EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT THE WEATHER…(Notes to Weather Forecasters…about Kansas but Apply to All…)
A viewer’s open advisory to Kansas weather-casters…
Rules of Engagement
1. Regardless of what sports team’s game was called because of the elements, whose race was postponed, whose kite flying outing was spoiled, or whether or not the meteorologist or the news anchor’s golf game was cancelled, none of these things mean that rain is a bad thing, particularly in a drought year. Without that rain many of the things that city dwellers are so fond of, watering their lawns, washing their cars and playing golf, become redundant. Without water the Green becomes the Brown and your swimming pool eventually becomes a very deep, pit barbecue.
2. Just as there is no such place as a “lie-barry,†no power generated by “newk-U-ler†energy, thus too there is no such month as “Feb-you-airy.†The second month of the year is pronounced EXACTLY as it is spelled. As public media figures, whose livelihood depends on words, learn to use your tools and they will serve you well.
3. (See #1) First and foremost this state (Kanzas), in fact this entire region’s providence exists upon an agrarian powered economy. Never condescend to the tillers of the soil and the stockmen just because you think it is too cold, too hot, too wet, or too dry. Unless your family’s livelihood depends on your petunias and tomato plants or lawn grass, they do not compare with two and one half sections of wheat, corn, or soybeans. In fact, as cruel as it is to say, I question if any of you’re viewers tune in for your editorial opinion on the weather in the first place. I most certainly don’t and can’t say that I know of anyone who does. Just give us the facts, please. (more…)

You Say You Want A (Nonbinding) Resolution…
Recently we’ve heard a lot about the “new†senate’s “non-binding†resolutions. If you don’t know what that means, let me explain.
Â
They are indeed “non-binding.†Other than the fact that they are covering any given senator’s butt for the NEXT election and showing our enemy how divisive the two parties have become, these resolutions don’t actually MEAN anything.
Â
That means that they are a waste of the senates’ time.
Â
That means that they are wasting our money.
Â
That means that the “new†senate is just as self-centered and impotent as the last senate.
Â
Sigh.
When will we ever learn?

“…and the Grammy goes too…”
Someone once said, “Hip-hop is to music what Etch-A-Sketchâ„¢ is to art…â€
Now even “Ludacris†wins Grammy Awards? (I thought that they only gave those out to musicians and singers for creating MUSIC?)
There are now 108 categories in the Grammy program. At least two major ethnic groups have their own version of the awards (implying perhaps that they cannot successfully compete within the demands of the original format).
Awards are also seemingly given now as political statements rather than on the merits of musicians and performers. What’s the point?
I was a card carrying musician for a couple of decades and, with that background, I can assure you that I don’t give a fig for the politics/religion/personal points of view of musicians. They are, as a group, among the flakiest people I know. The more talented they are the less competent they are. At the best of times the majority are lucky to feed and clothe themselves, get by in even the most basic of personal relationships, and have the money/business sense of a 6 year old. Good gravy, why on earth would I be interested in their politics?
(Of course the guy who basically gave credence to the idea that musicians and composers could think was one of my musical idols, John Lennon. Before him most musicians kept their opinions, if they had any, to themselves or, better yet, expressed them in their music and their art. Lennon was first and foremost an intellectual who’s chosen career just happened to be pop music. He might just as well have become a painter, author (which technically he was) or social commentator.
(He was certainly articulate but often wrong-headed. Other than his deep-seated belief in peace and nonviolence he was otherwise forever making this or that outlandish and/or grandiose claim, like some crazy but lovable uncle, then a few weeks or months later admitting that he had been talking through his hat. I can at least give him credit for eventually realizing his own limitations and for making an effort to correct his mistakes.
(Unfortunately, because he was glib and communicative it gave rise to the seriously erroneous theory that other show-folk must have clever insights and opinions as well. Well, yes, they did have opinions, but few if any were particularly bright and almost none were worth listening to.) (more…)

SILLIER & SILLIER…
…a couple of weeks ago democrat senator Joe Biden announced his candidacy for the presidency. Joe is a smart guy. When it comes to international affairs and America’s foreign policy Joe is in the top 5% of U.S. senators who knows the ropes.
His problem has always been his mouth. He can’t shut up, even when he has a point, until he’s belabored it to the degree that even his staunchest supporters are ready to pull off their shoes, pull off a sock, and stuff it in Joe’s yap just to shut him up.
On the same day as his announcing his candidacy he gave an interview and discussed Barak Obama. While listing off some of the better traits of his potential rival Joe described Obama as, among other things, “clean.â€
It was an odd thing to say and it somehow seemed to cast unfortunate aspersions on Black America that, for the most part, they are perhaps somehow less fastidious in their personal hygiene than their “white†counterparts. (more…)
